Whether their association with the post indie pop-rock scene has helped or hindered The Maccabees is still up for debate. after all the Brighton based songsmiths aren’t exactly as dangerous as The Libertines were, nor have they ever been able to hold a candle to Bloc Party’s frenetic funk tomfoolery, instead The Maccabees have concentrated on the music, to hell with being cool. Hey, it worked for David Gray.
Judging by the lead sample from their sophomore effort, ‘Love You Better’, The Maccabees’ no frills approach appears to be a gamble that is paying off. This is a beautiful slice of epic songwriting, wonderfully paced with a teasing tempo that will hook you in for the three and a half minute duration. The plodding backbeat is offset perfectly by Orlando Weeks’s less is more vocals coercing his listener to drift along the disjointed melody. The track comes complete with a gorgeous trumpet accompaniment which rounds out the cacophony of diverse instrumentation perfectly.
Truly a song to get lost in and better still ‘Wall Of Arms’ is out now. Well, what are you waiting for?
