I must admit I’d never heard anything of The Plight before I put this CD on, so I don’t have much background on them for you. This is their first full album, after the acclaimed success of their previous mini-album.
There seems to be two sides to this album. I was immediately surprised by the opening track “Spit on the Cross – Part 1″, which had a very bluesy element to it. It only lasted a minute or so, before track two started.
Heavy guitar driven riffs provide the backbone and life of the tracks. The problem comes when the vocals kick in. It seems they are going for a grungy, punk kind of style, which is quite an unusual angle, considering the classic rock foundation to the tracks.
Unfortunately the singer lacks power and conviction. His breathy warble adds absolutely nothing, and only succeeds in distracting the listener from what could almost be a flawless masterclass in classic rock riffs.
As one track ends, and the next begins, a little excitement grows inside. Each track explodes with a fierce rhythm that you can’t help but tap your feet to. That doesn’t finish when the vocals kick in, but a little niggling feeling overtakes the excitement, and leaves you feeling a little disappointed.
I am extremely entertained by the music from The Plight, they know what they like and they play it extremely well. The singer lacks the punch required to take the band even further. I think the singers unique voice could enhance a live performance, it just doesn’t carry through to a CD very well. I definitely recommend checking them out if you like hard hitting riffs or the post punk attitude.

opinions aside, i think if you had a knowledge of their background, you’d see they wern’t “going for a grungy, punk kind of style” . they are a punk rock band with a heavy rock influence, really. not having a go…
